Hated the way my name was spelled as a child.....started spelling it my way....all my life.

Now for business reasons i need to change it to the way it exist on my licenses and passport.
How do you legally change your name in California? How long does the process take? where do you go to do it?
The main way to change your name is by filing a Petition for a Change of Name.

enter your county in here for the fee in your county: http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp/low鈥?/a>

In most cases, you have to pay a fee when you ask the court to change your name. People with very low incomes can get a %26quot;fee waiver%26quot; and don't have to pay the court fee.

On top of the court fee, you may have to pay to publish your petition for the change of name in a newspaper. Publishing the name change in a local newspaper is required in most name change cases.

After you file your Petition for Change of Name, you will get a court date on your Order to Show Cause between 6 and 12 weeks away. If your paperwork is correct and you followed all the required steps, the court will give you a court order changing your name within a few days. Some courts are busier than others and it may take longer.
